Salary Negotiations

I hate negotiating salaries. I just seems so seedy and selfish. Or is it just me finding it difficult to talk about money like that?

Nah, it's not unique to you by a long shot mate. I know of no-one who actually enjoys such negotiations - except possibly H, who I am not convinced has a soul anyway.

Be hard, be mean, be selfish. Everyone else is. Swallow your embarrassment about blowing your own trumpet for the half hour it takes.

In some bizarre altruistic move which revealed my communistic tendencies, I failed to ask for a salary review last year since the company hadn't met budget. Consequently I got no rise and my bonus structure lapsed. Obviously, I made sure everyone below me got an above-inflationary pay rise. This year I won't be so stupid. My boss gave himself a 12K pay rise last year. He wasn't as naive or altruistic as me and he runs the company. Communism doesn't pay.

It wasn't too bad in the end - I'd sent an email - and I do text much better than I do phone. When the phonecall came I got close to what I wanted and I'm happy with that - after all it's all somebody's tax money and while I think I'm value for money... ;-)
