Oh I am. At least before I know people a little.

Certainly I need to get better at approaching people for pics in gigs/clubs. It's a regular resolution.

Strange. Shyness is usually related to a social fear of some description - are you afraid they may ridicule you?

What is the worst thing that could happen?

The worst thing that can happen is that I don't get a decent shot and then have to admit that after the event...

I know it's rather ridiculous. Hence my intention to confront it straight on!

I've got to say, I'm always impressed by your photography. The stuff you take at Maelfroth is the only photography I've seen that captures the atmosphere of an event, and I always enjoy having a photographer at club nights, gives me a record of my drunken exploits the morning after!

Not ridiculous at all - you take pride in your work and are wary that with photography it's a probability of how good a shot works out rather than a dead certainty. I don't think your issue is one of approaching people at all - it's a fear of sticking your creative neck out and it not looking great.

I think unless you are photographing ptographers, then you have nothing to worry about as to the average person, any of your shots are going to be infinitely better than anything they will have seen of themselves before. Only you will know how much 'better' it could have been.

Absolutely, however shyness is simply a lack of confidence, and it is compartmentalised.

How many 'shy' people do you see that become suddenly confident when dealing with issues they are very good at?

I don't know - I joke that my camera is a social crutch and that's probably true. However more than just analysing I need to get out there and do some more.

I think it's a bit of "approaching people" and a bit of "failure".

You are clearly a shy person with fundamental confidence issues, however you are also a highly intelligent person who suffers constant conflict between the confidence of intellect and deeply ingrained self doubt.

Quite, however you chose it and one does wonder about the thought processes behind using an image of oneself as a child on a site such as this. Some unresolved childhood issues perhaps.

I find it difficult judging how serious you're being - but I feel it's a large leap from being slightly apprehensive about approaching strangers to a full-blown psychological condition.

And I don't ~like~ phones but I'm perfectly capable of using them - I suspect because email is just far superior!

Social phobia (http://www.socialphobia.org/whatis.html#whatis1) manifests itself in many forms and I'm being serious.

The phone thing interests me - I know someone else like that. I wonder if it's actually the lack of visual feedback that causes the problem. It could be linked to an autistic spectrum disorder I suppose.

Problems trusting people on the phone? Or is it the reverse - you are afraid of how people perceive your voice?

..actually yes we must factor in email as there is no visual feedback there...so... logically it would appear to be a fear of one's presentation rather than how one perceives others.

I just thought it was a bit rude hijacking kneeshooter's post and wanted to move the discussion elsewhere. However, I feel I should reply to your comment. While the basics of your assessment of my character are correct in that I am shy and have some quite deep-rooted confidence issues in some areas, I have to disagree with the strength of the words you have used. Its quite amusing you see me in such strong terms and possibly explains a lot. I appreciate the highly intelligent remark though ;p
