The best way to round off a week which was quite tiring was to relax to Oxford with a lot of lights, some jolly good company, approximately twice as many people as cameras - oh, plus a lot of chocolate.

I'll go through some of my photos later, but behind the cut is one I took of Chiara (WINOLJ)'s eye. What's most interesting to me isn't the eye, the make-up or the contact lens - but the reflection of myself in her pupil. Weird.

Anyway - take a look. Much, much more soon but first I'm away from home for another couple of nights thanks to w**k.





I'm also thinking of buying a laptop. I'm drawn to a MacBook Pro. Any Appleites out there want to talk me into spending more money than just the basic model - or advise me to wait a bit for any reason?

I am only looking at the 15" as the 17" is too big for what I want; or maybe just a MacBook with a bucket of RAM. It is, in practice, likely to remain my second machine as a desktop with 21" and 17" monitors is likely to remain my first choice for photo editing. I was also considering IBM/Lenovo but almost certainly not Sony as I've found their build quality to be rubbish.

Can you use Nokia mobiles as modems on MacOS? I'm assuming yes...

You might want to wait until OSX.5 'Leopard' comes out, otherwise you'll have to pay extra for it.
You can use Nokias as bluetooth modems but sometimes you have to install 3rd party software for unsupported models. Note that nokia don't provide any software for macs, hence you can't connect them via usb.

I'm more interested in Lightroom than aperture, but yes :-)

It would be sensible to wait for Leopard, but as the release date seems to be rather vague I'm not sure I can justify waiting indefinitely.

That was shot ISO400 with just one modelling light, no flash. But obviously I'm not claiming it was anything other than an accident.

Can't remember what your new job is :-) but you might want to check to see if they have sorted a Mac educational discount.

Or talk to one of your friends in academia and see if they can sort the computer for you. It's worth about 15%, usually.

Actually, why dont you bbring the phone round to mine and see if my Mac will talk to it next time you are in London. Same OS after all - that should reassure you 9and I am 100% sure it will work fine).

More enquiries have concluded it should be possible - so that's ok. But it'd be nice to catch up anyway. Skiing season at the moment is reducing my London free-time. But soon it will be over (both for the season and with the advent of global warming - possibly forever!).

The basic model should be fine - the little ones are a lot more portable than the bigger ones, and they work so much better as a laptop than aything else I;ve used. I have one of the old 12" PowerBook ones, and it;s the best laptop I ever owned. Connection via a Nokia shoul be fine if it has bluetooth - all that stuff is extremeley well supported. hell, I mange on mine and it a 'serail anble only' model nokia. Never had any problems with more modern phones 9and again, the integration is a damn sight better than on windows XP).

So I cant convince you to spend any more money (aside from fill the thing with RAM - tahts always a good idea).

Can't comment about Nokias since I'm an Sony Ericsson person but when I upgrade my iBook I'm going for the Pro purely because of (a) the PCI-X slot and (b) they don't use the integrated Intel graphics but an ATI chip. They do come with DVI and can properly run big monitors so you can use one as a desktop replacement. The lighty up keyboard might also be useful in low light situations. Software wise I haven't progressed beyond iPhoto for my EOS.

Good eyeballing. I remember getting enthusiastic when I first saw my reflection in an eye :)
