Considering the future
Jul. 16th, 2003 01:36 pmI'm considering the idea of going self-employed - and contracting out. I'm reasonably sure I can find work to keep me above the breadline (if not actually rich) - but I need to read around the subject.
Can anyone make any suggestions as to books, websites etc?

Date: 2003-07-16 05:55 am (UTC)My company is in a no work place, with no real prospects inside the next month - so if you know of any companies in desparate need of Web Application / Web Services Development, I'd love to hear about it - and there was no indication until very recently that we were going to be here. Things were going swimmingly until a couple of weeks ago, and then we all suddenly realised that with no excess money in the bank from previous work, no work = no money, rather than just "Fiesta!". We should be finishing a big job for a Kitchen Appliance retailer, but we've just heard from a company that we are friends with that our client has stopped paying their bills, is making people redundant and not even getting close to achieving their sales requirement to stay solvent - oddly enough we're not doing any more work for them until they are in the money again.
Just be sure you've got plenty of work out there - prefferably for about 50% more money than you actually need to pay everything and have fun, so that you can squirrel it, 'cos you're going to need it.
Anyway, it's not all gloom and doom - we look like we're warming a new client up, so hopefully there'll be more money before the rent is needed (next month). The big upside is feeling as though you're building something, rather than just lining someone else's pockets - I say go for it!

But still - point noted.
